Robux: what they are and how to get them

The origin of Roblox's currency, every way to earn it, pricing, the Developer Exchange, and the most common scams.

What Robux are

Robux is the currency used to pay for anything paid inside Roblox: clothing, game passes, microtransactions and any item made by other users. It launched on May 14, 2007 to replace the old "Roblox points".

For years it coexisted with a second currency, tickets, which the platform fully removed on April 14, 2016, leaving Robux as the only official currency.

The name blends "Roblox" and "bucks". The symbol also changed over time: on November 21, 2019 the old "R$" icon was replaced with the current honeycomb-shaped, gold-colored one. Since then Roblox has discouraged using the "R$" abbreviation.

How to get it

The most direct way is buying it with real money. Purchases through the website have been available since September 26, 2008, and since December 11, 2012 it's also possible to buy from the mobile app.

The other main route is subscribing to Roblox Premium: the membership grants a fixed amount of Robux every month, and that amount depends on the plan.

Premium Payouts

Premium subscribers can also receive "Premium Payouts" whenever other Premium users play their experiences. The amount received depends on how many Premium players joined.

Selling content

Any user can sell shirts, scripts and game passes, keeping a 70% cut of the price after marketplace fees.

Premium members get extra permissions: they can also create and sell pants, and list their own limited items for sale.

Groups

A group can sell items in the avatar shop just like an individual user would. The difference is that earnings go into a shared pool (the "group funds"), later distributed among members with admin permissions.

Trading

Robux can be included as part of a trade between players, though the marketplace fee still applies.

Old methods (discontinued)

Before tickets and Builders Club existed, everyone earned 5 Robux a day just for logging in, plus 1 "Robuk" for every place they visited.

Until mid-August 2019, paying for a Builders Club tier also granted a daily bonus: 15 Robux/day on the base plan (only 5 before late 2016), 35/day on Turbo Builders Club, and 60/day on Outrageous Builders Club. None of these bonuses exist anymore.

Developer Exchange (DevEx)

The Developer Exchange is the program that lets developers who meet certain requirements cash out Robux for real money on a monthly basis. The current rate is $200 USD per 100,000 Robux.

What Robux are spent on

Creating a group costs 100 Robux, and adding a new rank to it costs another 25. Changing your username costs 1,000 Robux, creating a badge for a game costs 100, and uploading a video thumbnail for an experience costs 500.

Uploading an audio file to the library costs between 20 and 350 Robux depending on its length. Robux is also spent bidding on ads (minimum 5), paying for access to paid games, buying catalog items, and purchasing game passes or developer products.

Two things no longer exist: paying to upload a game's thumbnail (used to cost 10 Robux, that requirement was removed) and creating group "clans" (used to cost 500 Robux, removed in the group redesign).

Bot scams

Automated bots exist, run by people trying to steal passwords or valuable items (including Robux and limiteds). They usually show up in the comments of games and items, promising "instant" free Robux in exchange for visiting an external site.

For a while they abused the /me chat command, which displayed a highlighted username as if it were a system message, making the scam look more credible. Roblox disabled that command by default on May 17, 2019 specifically because of this abuse, though bots simply kept posting the same message without it.

They're usually easy to spot: they tend to wear the default avatar (the classic "Bacon Hair") or catalog clothing nobody else would wear.

Trivia

The "R$" abbreviation stopped being recommended partly because it overlaps with the Brazilian real, an actual national currency.

On April 12, 2007, the winning team of the first Paintball tournament in the game Ultimate Paintball received free Builders Club and Robux as a prize.

The currency has faced recurring criticism over how hard it is to earn without spending real money, especially after tickets were removed.
